Welcome to Class Six

Teacher: MrJ. McDonald, Teaching Assistant: Mrs S. Thomas (not pictured)

In Class 6, there are currently 15 pupils and 2 adults. We have a fun, friendly and positive atmosphere which allows us all to work hard but with a smile – sometimes it seems like the adults are having just as much fun as the children!

Playground leaders

After writing letters of application to Mrs. Pascoe about why we should become Playground leaders, she has finaly decided who should be responsible for playground activities for break and lunch times.

Being a Playground leader is a big responsibility as we are there to encourage people to play nicely together and set a good example to the rest of the school.

Here is the playground leader rota:

Week beginning 28th Jauary 2013: Percentages and flashbacks

This week in literacy we have been looking at flashbacks.  We have looked at what can give you a flashback, whether it be a word, smell, setting, person or thought.  Class 6 have been thinking about flashbooks in books and films, and we have looked at several different books and films that include flashbacks; such as The Hobbit and Harry Potter. We have found that most examples come in the form of diaries, dreams or memories.  Flash Gordon has helped us write our own flashbacks.  Can you think why a producer or author would use a flashback?

In Numeracy we have looked at different uses of percentages.  We have looked at percentages in shapes and with numbers - which has been useful in helping us with the discounts we had in the Christmas sales!

This week we have also been hard at work in organising our class library, and we have been given the extra responsibility of being library monitors.  This will really help our reading and we will be finding out the most popular books!  We must remember to do our 10 minutes reading each night as this will really help with our Reading SATs.  If a parent is reading with us, then get them to ask questions about the book!

Homework

Your homework is a very important aspect of your school life.  It is important that you start to take learning into your own hands and don't restrict your learning just to when your in school.

Remember, homework is not set because we love all the marking.  It is set so that you can show off what you have learnt and help make sure that you are ready for the SPLATs and for next year.

Please make sure that you complete your homework on time, because if you don't it means time is taken away from new, exciting things that we could be doing.  Remember that Mrs. Thomas and myself are free every break or lunch time to help you - all you need to do is ask, so don't say you were stuck with it the day it is due to be handed in!

If you lose your homework sheet then see me for a new one or log into our DB Primary site to see what this week's is.

The Government suggest that you do two and a half hours of homework a week, so spend a fair amount of time on your homework to make it a good quality.

Homework is set in one load each week and is normally set on the Wednesday due to be returned on the Tuesday the following week unless told otherwise.

Spring term - Food and Farming

Welcome back to school! I hope you had a fantastic holiday and got what you wanted for Christmas?

This term is going to be an extremely busy one for Class 6.  We will be preparing ourselves for the SATs (Silly Assessment Test) or as we like to call them in Class 6 - SPLATs.  The English SATs this year differ from previous years, so we will be doing lots of practice on grammar, punctuation and spelling as well as reading and writing.  It is so important that you use your Study Books to help you with your homework and to revise.  In school we will be doing a lot of reinforcement and looking at things that you have already covered this year and in previous years - but we will also be looking at new things like Graffiti and Harry Potter to help our learning.

In Maths we will be doing a lot of revision too, and going over things such as percentages, fractions, division and angles.

Parents were sent home a full list of the Year 6 plan this term, if you have misplaced it or didn't receive one then let me know and we can get one for you!

it is so important that your children's learning continues at home so please use the Maths target books and support your child with their reading and homework. Thanks you.

Looking back on the Autumn term...

Last term was an extremely busy term for the year 6 class.  The year sixes didn't have long to settle into their new routine before they were whisked away to London for two days.  We were fortunate enough to get a tour of the Houses of Parliament and watched some fantastic shows such as War Horse and Matilda the Musical.  We were so taken by Matilda the Musical that we decided to do our own interpretation of it for our Chrismtas play.  We worked very hard at producing a script and we hope you all enjoyed it!  Pictures of our London trip and Chrismtas play can be found on our DB Primary page.

Our topic for last term was Dragons.  We decided to do a Dragon's Den topic with our goal of selling a product at the Chrismtas fete.  Mr. McDonald allowed us to decide on what our products would be so we had to do lots of research into what would sell well and would be achievable to make.  Once we decided on our products we had to research costs and materials.  We then had to present a pitch to the Dragons (Mr. McDonald, Mrs. Pascoe and Mrs. Prowse) to see if they would let us borrow the money to make our products.  W had to find out or profit margins, predicted expenditure, unit prices and much more.

When the Christmas fete came we had several stores selling card games, cushions, Christmas decorations, mugs, t shirts and biscuits.  We raised over £200!
